issue 4 of Hoarder magazine - strictly over 18's only !!
this collection of american mens magazines from the mid to late 1960's were purchased from a second hand bookshop in birmingham sometime in the early nineties. the shop was on Hurst St (i think) and contained all manner of treasures - piles of musty old magazines, shelves full of worn out books, cardboard boxes of random records, annuals, comics, stickers, just tons of great stuff. I didn't have much money at the time, if I had been able i'd have made an offer on the entire stock.
back then i was picking these up for something like 50p - a pound tops so i always made sure i saved a few coins to help build the collection. Initially i picked them up because i'd hone in on anything from the sixties (especially if it was cheap!) but the combination of lurid, colourful type, sensational headlines, bizarrely titled fiction (with fantastic illustrations & paintings to accompany them) made these compulsory purchases. I think i might have originally picked them up to use for collages and flyers but i couldn't bear to take the scalpel to any of them. the roots of of these publications were in the cheap, pulp magazines prevalent in postwar america. produced to satisfy a thirst for war heroes and action stories as time marched forward they came to include stories and articles exploiting the notion of the swinging sixties and a new permissive society where all manner of weird, wonderful things were out there being enjoyed by a new generation of hipsters and swingers.
enjoy...
